Google Maps, TeleAtlas and Ryer Island

Update September 2009: TeleAtlas and Google continue to
label Snug Harbor Drive as "Port Lane"
after almost 2 years of written notices from property owners and Solano County.  MSN Live or new http://bing.com get it right.  However, they DID finally correct the island names, so we are thankful for that!

Updated December 2008:  Google and TeleAtlas (the company that puts the road and island name labels onto Google Maps) now label Ryer Island where it is located; however, if one asks for directions to Ryer Island from places like San Jose they are directed to Grand Island.  Does this make any sense?  In addition, TeleAtlas and Google continue to label Snug Harbor Drive as "Port Lane" and Hwy 160 in the  Walnut Grove as being 160 in the town of Delta, California.
Where is Google and TeleAtlas getting their info?!

Update October 2008:  Google notified webmaster that TeleAtlas does the labeling of roads and islands, and provided link to give notice of the conflicts.  Solano County surveyor and Public Works dept. also agreed to notify TeleAtlas of the conflict of names, including the problem of incorrect street names in some locations of Ryer Island.

In the meantime, Solano County suggested all visitors to Ryer Island used this link:  http://maps.live.com/

Explanation:  Google Maps in 2006 or early 2007 began to list the Real Ryer Island as "Tyler Island", another Delta location two islands away from Ryer.  It listed a place called Long Point Island near Roe Island as Ryer Island.  (Google corrected their map eventually in spring 2009)

Why is this important?  The Real Ryer Island is very large and easily accessible by bridge and two ferries.  The Real Ryer Island has large ranches growing grapes, cherries, vegetables and other crops, and has two resorts called Hidden Harbor (Marina) and Snug Harbor Resort (Marina, RV park, rental cabins).  There are also about 300 private residents of the Real Ryer Island.  But the island Google Maps shows viewers is an inaccessible island in the Suisun Marsh.  See the problem? People who use Google to look up directions to visit family or friends on the Real Ryer Island get information on the one that is in the Suisun Marsh.  Attempts to have the problem corrected through the Google Map reporting links have been unsuccessful.

The Solution:  Google Maps needs to update their records to match the records of Solano County http://www.co.solano.ca.us/depts/assessor/viewparcelmaps.asp and agency reports that used the Long Point Island data applied against the REAL Ryer Island need to review the reports to verify the data source.

and/or the USGS mapping service online.

In the meantime, anyone wanting to get directions to the REAL Ryer Island should use Google Earth or other GPS service.  Use latitude and longitude information and you will be directed to the correct Ryer Island.  For example, if you are looking for Snug Harbor on Ryer Island, use GPS:  Lat: 38.199305   Longitude -121.613503
